UK's first offshore substation installed at wind farm

The UK's first offshore substation has been installed at the Barrow Offshore Wind farm 7 kilometres off the Cumbrian coast marking the completion of a key phase in the development of the 30-turbine wind farm, which is a joint venture between Centrica of the UK and Danish energy company DONG.

The 480 tonne substation will transform the 33kV power generated from the wind turbines up to 133kV, which will then be exported to the national grid connection point at Heysham on the Lancashire coast through a 27 km long subsea transmission cable.

Work is progressing steadily at the wind farm with 17 of the 30 turbine foundations installed by the specialist vessel Resolution. The remaining 13 foundations and the wind turbines themselves are planned to be installed during the autumn and winter with the wind farm expected to be generating electricity by the turn of the year.

Work to fit out the substation was begun in April by a 20-strong team from Barrow firm Agrilek at the town's Ramsden Dock.

BOW general project manager, Anders Heine Jensen said he was very pleased with the success of the project to install the UK's first offshore substation. He said: "The installation of the offshore substation is a successful milestone in the BOW project and work continues to make good progress offshore."

The BOW wind farm will provide clean, green electricity for 65,000 British Gas customers.
